How to read the result
The calculator does not say whether overtime is objectively worth it. It shows several views: gross overtime, extra take-home pay, the net rate per overtime hour, the rate after extra committed time, and the rate after extra unavoidable costs.

Methodology and assumptions
This calculator reuses the WorthMyTime 2026/27 England, Wales and Northern Ireland employment tax estimator. It compares an annualised base-pay estimate with an annualised base-plus-overtime estimate. It does not model every payroll timing or tax-code detail, and Scottish Income Tax is not included yet.
This first version assumes the selected employee pension percentage applies to overtime as well. If your pension scheme treats overtime differently, adjust the pension percentage or treat the output as a rougher estimate.
For the wider approach, read the WorthMyTime methodology. For important decisions, read the disclaimer.
FAQ
Why is my net overtime rate lower than my overtime rate?
Gross overtime can be reduced by Income Tax, National Insurance, student loan deductions and pension contributions before it reaches take-home pay.
Should I include extra travel time?
If overtime means staying late, making an extra journey or waiting around unpaid, including that time can show a more realistic time-committed rate.
Does overtime affect student loan repayments?
It can. Student loan deductions are based on income above the relevant threshold, so extra overtime income may increase deductions.
Is this accurate for every payslip?
No. It is an annualised estimator. Payroll timing, tax codes, scheme rules and employer treatment of overtime can change exact payslip results.
